Republic hold Holland to World Cup qualifying draw

Republic of Ireland Women claimed an impressive point after holding European champions Holland to a goalless draw in Nijmegen in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Holland put the Republic under huge pressure but their defence was rock solid as they remained unbeaten in Group 3 after wins against Northern Ireland and Slovakia.

The hosts were the heavy favourites to claim victory and rained down shots in the second half, but with 10 behind the ball Ireland held out, and even survived a penalty shout for handball late in the match.

The result left Colin Bell's side level on points with Holland, who are top thanks to a better goal difference, and one clear of Norway in third.
