Rory Patterson bags a brace to set Derry City on a roll

Bray Wanderers 0-3 Derry City

By Eoin Wilson

Derry City moved up to fifth place in the Airtricity Premier Division as they swept aside the challenge of Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds last night.

It is now two wins in two for Kenny Shiels team, who have responded magnificently to their opening day defeat at Finn Harps.

An early header from Aaron Barry and a second half brace from Rory Patterson saw Derry to a comfortable win, in what was a workmanlike performance against a limited Bray outfit.

Just five minutes in Derry were celebrating as Barry McNamee's deep free kick found Patterson free at the back post, his volley across goal was again brilliantly pushed away by Cherrie., but McNamee was quick to react to the loose ball and he dinked a superb cross back into the heart of the penalty area where Barry stooped to head home.

For all their possession, Bray failed to create any real goal scoring chances with McBride and Barry absolutely superb at the heart of the Derry defence.

When Derry did get the ball to Patterson and McNamee, the threat was genuine, and they should have gone into the break with a 2-0 lead. Alan McNally carelessly gave the ball away just yards from his own goal, with McNamee intercepting before he drew two Bray defenders.

He hooked the ball to his left where Patterson stood unmarked, one-on-one with Cherrie, only for the goalkeeper to push the striker's left footed shot behind for a corner.

The crucial second goal came on 71 minutes and it went the way of Derry after Harry Monaghan bullied his way into the Bray penalty area, turned his man and picked out a pass for Patterson who hooked the ball past Cherie.

With that, the game was up for Bray and Derry put the gloss on a solid, professional performance as Patterson shrugged off the challenge of Paul Finnegan in added time and casually sidestepped Cherrie before rolling in his third goal in three games.
