Rovers held in Champions League tie

Stephen O'Donnell missed a late chance as Shamrock Rovers were held to a goalless draw by Ekranas in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round in Dublin.

Rovers had their chances against the Lithuanian league leaders, the best of which saw O'Donnell burst through late only to fire straight at visiting keeper Emilljus Zubas.

Hopes were high after last season's heroics when Rovers became the first Irish team to reach the Europa League group stages, but they must now get a result in Lithuania next week to progress.

Welsh side The New Saints put up a brave performance to hold Swedish champions Helsingborgs to a goalless draw in their first leg clash in Oswestry.

New signing Chris Jones hit the post as the hosts dominated the game for long periods but were unable to gain an advantage ahead of next Wednesday's return game in Sweden.
