Aberdeen quick to snap up Rory McArdle

Northern Ireland international Rory McArdle has joined Aberdeen in a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old, who has earned him a call-up for Northern Ireland's trip to the USA and Chile this month, leaves Rochdale under freedom of contract.

Dons boss Mark McGhee views the versatile defender as a natural replacement for Charlie Mulgrew.

The former Sheffield Wednesday ace can play anywhere across the back four and was a target for clubs north and south of the border. The League Two club couldn’t compete with the wages Aberdeen offered.

McArdle scored at Wembley in the 2008 League Two play-off final, but Rochdale were beaten 3-2 by Stockport County.

However, this season he helped them win automatic promotion after finishing third.
