Celtic target former Premier League pair as Rangers eye two significant summer swoops: Old Firm transfer rumours
Celtic could soon be buoyed by the arrival of two former Premier League players, although it would come at a price, according to the latest transfer rumours.
First of all, former Manchester City star Yaya Toure has hinted that he is open to a move to Brendan Rodgers' side. A report by gazzetta.gr had claimed that Celtic had made an offer to the 35-year-old, who is without a club after leaving Olympiakos last month.
Toure has now spoken to confirm that, while his preference would be a return to the Premier League, he is not opposed to the idea of joining the Hoops, where his brother Kolo is a coach.
“Celtic is a great team, but let me speak to Brendan and we will see," he said on SKy Sports' Monday Night Football. "Who knows, maybe Kolo is arranging something for me behind the scenes. We will see.
“I have been playing in the Premier League and for me it’s been the most enjoyable but we never know, maybe I can end up in Scotland or back in England. I want maybe one more year at a high level.”
If Toure does join Celtic, he could be joined by former Newcastle defender Chancel Mbemba. The Sun has claimed that Porto are keen to land Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham and are willing to let Mbemba go the other way to sweeten the deal. The 24-year-old has started just a single Premiera Liga game for his new club after leaving the Magpies in the summer.
Over at Rangers, Charlton forward Karlan Ahearne-Grant is the latest to be linked. The Gers are keen on landing the in-form striker on a free transfer this summer, with his contract expiring at the League One side. The 21-year-old has netted 11 goals in his last 19 league outings and, having been capped by England at every under-age level, is highly rated.
At the other end of the pitch, Steven Gerrard is looking for more experience in the form of ex-Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel. Fanatik.com has claimed that Skrtel is set for a wage cut to stay at current side Fenerbahce when his deal expires this summer and that his old friend Gerrard is trying to lure him to Glasgow. The 34-year-old has started 15 games in this season's Super Lig although his side are struggling at second bottom in the table.
