Australian club closing in on signing of Celtic captain Scott Brown, says chief
The A-League's new team Western Melbourne are closing in on the signing of Celtic skipper Scott Brown, according to one of their backers.
The brand new side want Brendan Rodgers' skipper as their marquee signing for the 2019 season and have been said to be willing to offer Brown a three year contract.
Brown, 33, is out of contract this summer and now Maurice Bisetto, one of three backers behind Western Melbourne's consortium, is confident of convincing Brown to make the summer switch.
“We are pretty close with some players including a marquee. We are looking at a pre-season start in June, so things need to get moving," he said.
“We think Scott Brown has a lot of positives and could make a significant contribution to a new club... as a leader on and off the field.
“There’s no doubt we could go for a bigger name, and that might get eyeballs and put bums on seats initially, but we are really focused on results and performance and the style of football we want to play.”
Brown has lifted 17 trophies with Celtic and made over 500 appearances, and while he would be a big loss for the Hoops, the club have reportedly said they won't stand in his way should he choose to move on.
