Celtic striker Moussa Dembele has joined French giants Lyon on a five-year-deal.

The fee of €22m is a record for Scottish football. Coming at around £20m, it is the highest transfer fee received by a Scottish club, far surpassing the £13m Southampton paid Celtic for Virgil Van Dijk back in 2015.

Celtic paid £400k for Dembele just two years ago when they signed the Frenchman from Fulham.

Dembele underwent a medical in Glasgow earlier on Friday.

He left Celtic training early on Friday and Celtic later accepted an offer from the French club.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers had admitted that Celtic had received a large offer from Dembele but told the media he didn't expect the striker to leave the club.

However in a statement released later on Friday Rodgers said that he agreed with the decision to sell Dembele.

"Every decision we make at Celtic will always be in the best interests of the club and our supporters," Rodgers said.

"It is vital to make clear that we have never promised any player that he can leave the club at a particular time. It has never happened. In fact, we have said all along that we did not wish to sell Moussa, given the circumstances within the transfer window and that is why we rejected a significant offer yesterday.

"However, this particular decision to accept this offer has been taken in order to serve the best interests of the first-team squad, my coaching team and the culture and environment we have created in these last two seasons.

"The board and myself are united and they have been very supportive to me on this issue."
