Steven Gerrard rejects Championship move to remain at Rangers: report

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has reportedly rejected the opportunity to move to the English Championship.

While the former Liverpool captain ultimately dreams of managing in the Premier League, ideally with his old club, the Times has reported that Gerrard has rejected the chance to move across the border this summer.

The opportunity came via Championship side Derby County, who are expecting to lose boss Frank Lampard to Chelsea this summer.

The Times claims that, after Derby approached Gerrard with a view to holding talks over the position, the Rangers chief had no interest, aiming to reach the Premier League through achieving success in his current role.

Gerrard led Rangers to the runners-up spot in the Scottish Premiership last season and, already active in the transfer market, is intent on building a squad that will close the nine point gap to champions Celtic.

Derby lost out to Aston Villa in last season's Championship play-off final but are expected to search for another young manager in a bid to follow the same formula that brought success under Lampard.
