Scotland and Hearts in battle for Martin O'Neill's right hand Austin McPhee man

By Paul Ferguson

Northern Ireland assistant manager Austin McPhee is involved in an almighty tug-of-war over his services.

The Scottish FA were expected to name Kirkcaldy native McPhee, who has earned rave reviews as a key member of Michael O'Neill's backroom staff, their new Performance Director.

But Hearts may scupper that move following the appointment of 30-year-old Ian Cathro as manager at Tynecastle last night.

It is understood the Scottish Premiership outfit want McPhee to be Cathro's No.2 and have held talks with the 37-year-old.

A move to Hearts could allow McPhee the chance to continue in his role for Northern Ireland but he'd be forced to quit O'Neill's staff if he landed the SFA job. McPhee is today weighing up his options.
