Walter Smith backing for Ally McCoist

Rangers manager Walter Smith believes Ally McCoist will be better equipped than most to deal with the challenges he may face as boss next season.

As well as the demands to deliver silverware, McCoist could find himself with a number of other issues to contend with.

Craig Whyte's proposed takeover remains ongoing, with the manager-in-waiting still unsure of what funds will be available to him until a buy-out is finalised. Rangers also face the prospect of playing matches behind closed doors following UEFA disciplinary charges.

Smith said: “He knows what he's taking over, better than anyone, and he is keen to do so. He knows that he just has to get on with it, in the same manner as we've had to do in the last few years.

“So he is better prepared, I would think, than the majority of people who would maybe take over.”

Rangers host St Mirren in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League today and have the opportunity to move top, with leaders Celtic in Scottish Cup action.
