Social media reaction to Leroy Sane’s omission from Germany’s World Cup squad
Sane was overlooked in favour of Marco Reus and Julian Brandt.
The World Cup dreams of Manchester City’s Leroy Sane were unexpectedly ended when he was omitted from the 23-strong squad Germany will be taking to Russia.
An impressive campaign had concluded with him being named the PFA young player of the season having scored 14 goals, but he was overlooked in favour of the injury-prone Marco Reus and Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt by manager Joachim Low.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at how social media reacted to news the 22-year-old Sane had been left out.
No Sane? Not sane.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) June 4, 2018
Sané not in German World Cup squad? Well ok then.. good luck— John Arne Riise (@JARiiseOfficial) June 4, 2018
Sane's omission is a big surprise but if anything it shows the German winning mentality. He probably doesn't fit into their system as well as he does City's. They pick players that suit formation instead of square pegs in round holes. Who are we to argue with WC winning coach.— Stephen Elliott (@SleevesElliott) June 4, 2018
Obviously Joachim Löw (coach) doesn't think Leroy Sane fits as well as others. A National Team is not the best 23 players, it's the best group of 23 players. https://t.co/Ifm7YSlYqx— Alexi Lalas (@AlexiLalas) June 4, 2018
A big thank you for their efforts and commitment from Joachim #Löw to the four players who won't be going to Russia, @Bernd_Leno, @jonatah, @LeroySane19 and Nils #Petersen 👏#DieMannschaft #ZSMMN pic.twitter.com/ANUjXgOV6Y— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) June 4, 2018
