Sunderland goalkeeper can succeed De Gea says Manchester United legend

By Robert Jones

Manchester United look set to lose top keeper David de Gea to Real Madrid this summer but Old Trafford legend Alex Stepney believes there is an obvious English replacement.

United manager Jose Mourinho's decision to play Sergio Romero in the Europa League final against Ajax next Wednesday in Stockholm has added fuel to the belief that De Gea will be joining Real.

Should that be the case, European Cup winner Stepney said: "I would go for Jordan Pickford without a shadow of a doubt. Sergio Romero has been great and I think he is a very good international goalkeeper and he has to stay.

"Sergio might initially be the No.1 but I would say to Jordan, bed yourself down in a big club, learn more, get used to the club and try to push yourself forward as quickly as possible to become the first choice. Sunderland have been relegated but he has been the star for them."
