SuperCupNI finals: Co Antrim stun Manchester United to win Junior title as Co Down are beaten by Serie B select in Premier section final

By Jake Williamson

Co Antrim are the Junior Section champions at the SuperCupNI after a thrilling victory over favourites Manchester United in the final, defeating the Red Devils on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Antrim's Caolan McBride was the game winner in the shootout, keeping his cool to slot his penalty and hand the county side the title.

United had the best chances in the first half with Sean Stewart producing a goal-saving tackle to deny the star-studded English side. Charlie Savage looked United's best threat with brilliant delivery from set pieces.

But in the second half Antrim were certainly the better side in the second half and ramped up the pressure, with Ross McCausland causing havoc at times with his pace down United's flanks.

And it was Antrim who opened the scoring through Charlie Allen, who showed great footwork and composure to finish inside the box.

United fought back though, and it was a strange goal for Antrim to concede as Connor Friel made an error when coming out to catch a high ball, leading to an equaliser.

The two sides couldn't be settled in regulation time, so the game went to penalties, where Friel made up for his earlier error with a brilliant save in the shootout.

That allowed McBride to step up and calmly stroke his penalty into the back of the net to send the fans and Antrim team crazy.

Meanwhile Co Down were Serie B Italia select in the Premier section final.

Salvatore Buonavoglia and Marco Bingo scored the goals for the Italians as the Down boys picked up a silver medal.
