The Portuguese Cup final ball was for some reason delivered by a man riding a giant drone

Here’s some modern football for you.

In football there are two standard methods of match ball delivery – you can pick it up off a plinth, or someone can deliver it to you.

For the 2016/17 Portuguese Cup final, the organisers went with the latter, but added a unique twist to proceedings.

This is the complete opposite of keeping the ball on the deck.

Ahead of Benfica and Vitoria Guimaraes’s fixture to decide the destination of the cup, a man on a huge drone flew across the pitch, landed gently on the turf and presented the referee with the ball.

All very impressive, although whatever happened to players sprinting out on to the pitch, with one player hoofing the ball on to the turf as they did so?

Benfica won the game 2-1, completing the 11th league and cup double in their history as a result.

Modern football, and the Premier League, is known for its excesses – but we can’t imagine this one catching on in England any time soon.
