Watch: Patrick McEleney nets from distance on Oldham debut - but not how you think
Former Derry City midfielder Patrick McEleney netted from outside the box on his Oldham Athletic debut - every player's dream start to a new club. But all wasn't quite as it seemed.
Rather than curling an absolute peach into the top corner, the 25-year-old knew precious little about the long-range strike that went in off his back.
It was team-mate Jack Byrne that blasted a lengthy effort towards the Scunthorpe goal but, as McEleney tried to duck out of the way, his arched back provided the perfect platform to spring the strike into the top corner.
Have a look at the goal 1:11 into these highlights:
Surely he's not claiming the goal as his own - is he?
“100%," he said. “Jack has just given it to me but more importantly it was a great result and we look upwards now."
Oldham won 2-0 and now sit 18th in the League One table, just two points off the drop-zone. McEleney joined on a two-and-a-half-year deal from Dundalk in January.
