Wembley woe for Millwall's Shane Ferguson

By Steven Beacom

Millwall ace Shane Ferguson joined up with the Northern Ireland squad last night after disappointment for his club at Wembley.

While the rest of Michael O'Neill's players have been together for over a week, Ferguson has been on club duty trying to help the Lions into the Championship.

For Ferguson and Millwall, however, there was Wembley woe as they lost 3-1 to Barnsley in the League One Play-off final yesterday.

Barnsley were two up within 19 minutes thanks to Ashley Fletcher's goal on just 88 seconds, before a cracker from Adam Hammill extended the lead. Millwall hit back before the break through Mark Beevers but a second-half header from Lloyd Isgrove sealed promotion for Barnsley.

It completed a remarkable season for the Tykes, who were bottom of the table in December and then produced a stunning run of form to finish sixth and reach the Play-offs.

The game was marred by crowd trouble involving Millwall fans.

Ferguson was dreaming of a Wembley win before the Euro finals, but at least has the consolation of playing a part in a major tournament rather than kicking his heels in the coming weeks. He will be on the flight today taking the Northern Ireland squad to a training camp in Austria.
