Baggies give Evans green light for NI

By Adam McKendry

Jonny Evans has given Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill a massive injury boost ahead of their World Cup play-off against Switzerland, as revealed in yesterday's Belfast Telegraph.

The 29-year old was forced off with a groin injury during the first half of West Brom's 1-0 defeat to Southampton, sparking concerns that he may miss Northern Ireland's vital two-legged tie next month.

However, an update on the Baggies' website revealed the injury "is not thought to be serious", although Evans is a doubt for their next match against Manchester City.

Scans revealed that the defender avoided any cruciate ligament damage, however he will go for further scans on Sunday to discover the full extent of the injury.

However, O'Neill will be breathing a sigh of relief that he will be able to call upon Evans for the play-off, especially with Aaron Hughes likely to miss out and Gareth McAuley lacking in match fitness having only just returned from injury himself.
