Be inspired by history, Martin O'Neill tells Republic of Ireland squad

By Conor McLaughlin

Martin O'Neill has called upon his players to summon up their big-game spirit and book the Republic of Ireland's place in the World Cup play-offs.

The Republic sit third in Group D and only a win in Wales tonight will keep their dream alive - and could even secure a direct ticket to Russia in the unlikely event of Serbia losing at home to Georgia.

O'Neill's side have been no strangers to digging out big results when it really matters during his four-year tenure and, following Friday night's welcome win over Moldova in Dublin, the Republic boss wants the European Championship qualifying victory over Germany and last summer's defeat of Italy to inspire his men this evening.

"Friday night became a big game for us because we had to win that game to make this game really worthwhile for us," he said.

"Big nights that we have had in the past - and in the recent past - it's fresh in the memory."
