Ireland lose 1-0 to Serbia to leave World Cup dream hanging by a thread

Aleksandar Kolarov left the Republic of Ireland's World Cup dream hanging by a thread as 10-man Serbia cemented their place at the top of Group D with a hard-fought victory in Dublin.

Kolarov's 55th-minute thunderbolt secured a priceless 1-0 victory at the Aviva Stadium despite having to play the final 28 minutes with 10 men after defender Nikola Maksimovic was sent off for a professional foul.

However, Ireland substitute Daryl Murphy was convinced he should have been awarded a 76th-minute penalty as Martin O'Neill's men, who will be without the suspended Robbie Brady and James McClean against Moldova next month, went for broke.
