Luxembourg 3-2 Northern Ireland: Goals from Paterson and McAuley not enough to prevent humiliation
Northern Ireland have suffered an embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Luxembourg in a World Cup qualifier.
This was a shocking result for Michael O'Neill's team who at times were played off the park by a side ranked 140 in the world, 31 places below Northern Ireland.
Goals from Aurelien Joachim, Stefano Bensi and Mathias Janisch gave Luxembourg one of the most famous wins in their history.
Martin Paterson and Gareth McAuley netted for the visitors but that was not enough to prevent a shocking defeat at the Stade Josy Barthel
The last home World Cup qualifier Luxembourg won was in 1972 against Turkey and their last World Cup qualifying win anywhere was in Switzerland five years ago today.
This is their first World Cup qualifying home win in 43 games. All in all a desperate night for Northern Ireland.
