Donegal 1-17 Armagh 0-9
When Eoin Dowling netted a goal late in the first half, this Ulster Under-20 clash was all but sealed for Donegal.
Dowling’s goal put Donegal ahead by seven and Gary Duffy’s team were on their way to a comfortable 11-point win, 1-17 to 0-9.
Dowling took possession from a dropping ball in from Padraig McGettigan. Right in front of goal, he showed good composure to steady himself before slotting past Shea Magill, the Armagh goalkeeper.
After a tit-for-tat opening, Ryan McFadden’s score just before the water-break put Donegal ahead for the first time - and they never looked back.
“We were just more clinical and I’m delighted with how the boys performed,” Duffy commented.
“We’re blessed with a bit of height and Donegal teams haven’t been like that in the past. They won the individual battles and the lads believed in the system.”
During the spell when Donegal assumed control, a Dowling brace helped them lead by five, 0-8 to 0-4.
James McCormac ended a 21-minute spell without a score for the Orchard County. McCormac’s delightful effort over the right shoulder was disputed by Donegal, but stood only for Dowling to rattle in the goal almost immediately and Donegal were 1-8 to 0-4 ahead at the interval.
Johnny McGroddy (2) and Rory O’Donnell had Donegal 1-11 to 0-6 in front midway through the second half with Armagh’s challenge wilting.
Four frees by Mark McKeever ticked over the Armagh score, but Dowling’s goal effectively ended the game as a contest.
McGettigan had the final say for the hosts with his fourth of the night to tee up a quarter-final against Tyrone next week.
