Michael Langan was on cloud nine last night as holders Donegal soared into the Dr McKenna Cup semi-finals.

Langan's nine points steered Declan Bonner's men to an eight-point win over 14-man Cavan in front of a packed Ballybofey.

Jamie Brennan netted the Donegal goal in the 58th minute, volleying past Raymond Galligan.

Brennan ended with 1-4 as Donegal marched on.

Kevin Tierney punched home a late consolation for Cavan, but Donegal had the spadework done.

Ryan McHugh made his first competitive appearance since Donegal's Super8s defeat to Tyrone in August.

The All-Star had been out for the last five months after suffering a concussion while playing in a challenge game for club Kilcar.

McHugh was set to play for Ulster University against Derry but was given the green light to line out for his county.

McHugh swung over in the 47th minute as Donegal led by six and a fine stop by Shaun Patton, the hosts' goalkeeper, kept out a low shot by Ciaran Brady.

Cavan were down to 14 men after just seven minutes as corner-back David Phillips was red-carded for an off-the-ball hit on Donegal's Brennan.

Donegal started brightly and a Brennan brace had them three in front by the 10th minute.

Cavan hit back to level with goalkeeper Galligan among the scorers for the Breffni.

Langan landed four stylish points to put the hosts in control at the break, leading 0-10 to 0-6.

Martin McElhinney - making his 100th appearance in county colours - put the advantage out to five in the opening minutes of the second half.

Langan stretched the margin before Brennan fired to the net.

Cavan didn't quit and Tierney, a replacement, capitalised on some slack defending to find the net.

Young substitute Oisin Gallen scored two points as Donegal sealed a passage into the last four.
