Armagh too good for Monaghan

Monaghan 1-11 Armagh 2-13

A more experienced Armagh, with Stevie McDonnell and Ronan Clarke on board, proved too strong for Monaghan in this entertaining and at times free flowing Dr McKenna Cup game in Inniskeen last night.

The game started slowly enough with signs of ring rustiness but the standard improved as the first half progressed.

Sean Gorman helped to keep Monaghan in it with two excellent early saves. In the second quarter Armagh began to come more into the game with McDonnell and Aaron Kernan dangerous, especially on counter attacks.

Monaghan enjoyed a three point lead after 20 minutes but by the half hour mark Armagh had moved three in front with an unanswered 1-3 in the space of nine minutes.

Aaron Kernan netted in the 25th minute, McDonnell hit two points and Malachy Mackin got the other to give Armagh a two point advantage.

The teams continued trading points and McDonnell finished for the Orchard County with 1-4 while Dermot Malone scored Monaghan's goal.
