Breffni side rue missed chances as run ends

Cavan 0-18 Roscommon 1-17

After a seven-match unbeaten run in Division Three of the Allianz Football League, Cavan fell at the final hurdle when never-say-die Roscommon proved their masters in a riveting Croke Park showdown.

Cavan manager Terry Hyland was left to rue his side's inability to build on their first-half dominance and their profligacy after the break when they hit a string of wides.

"We were going well but we failed to maintain our momentum. It was disappointing to finish our campaign on such a note but now we must focus on our forthcoming championship match against Armagh. We certainly have work to do," said Hyland.

Cavan looked to be coasting when they led by 0-7 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter before being reined in when David Keenan's miscued effort somehow found the net to leave Roscommon just a point adrift at the interval (0-9 to 1-5).

Roscommon took their inspiration after the break from ace scorers Donie Shine and Ian Kilbride, who hit 11 points between them.

They finished strongly and substitutes Finbar Cregg and Colm Compton eased them over the line with late points.
