Calling the shots

By Declan Bogue

ULSTER SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

DOWN v ANTRIM

(Tonight, Newry, 7.00pm)

What difference is there between a panel that were relegated to Division Three, and another that missed out on promotion to the third tier by drawing one game?

We are about to find out here. Down might feel they are too good to lose this game, but it is a huge chance for Antrim to nick a rare Ulster Championship victory.

We go for the shock.

VERDICT: Antrim

DERRY v DONEGAL

(Tomorrow, Celtic Park, 4.00pm)

Derry will not be the side that were relegated to Division Four this spring, but it remains to be seen just how far they might have come in the interim. With their public expecting nothing, a respectable margin at the finish would be a bonus.

Donegal are coming with a polished look to themselves and possibly their best balanced panel since they reached the 2014 All-Ireland final.

Hard to imagine anything but one outcome here.

However, putting up a bit of fight might just be enough to show for Derry.

VERDICT: Donegal

CONNACHT SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

LEITRIM v ROSCOMMON

(Today, Carrick-on-Shannon, 5.30pm)

After their scare in the Bronx, Leitrim live to fight another day, but it ends here all the same.

VERDICT: Roscommon

LEINSTER SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

WESTMEATH v LAOIS

(Today, Tullamore, 5.00pm)

Not much to choose between the two sides.

VERDICT: Laois

KILDARE v CARLOW

(Tomorrow, Tullamore, 2.00pm)

This week, Carlow’s coach, Steven Poacher of Down, gained warm praise from Martin Clarke who said Down should get him in as soon as possible.

We will see just what he and manager Turlough O’Brien can do here, but it’s a huge ask.

VERDICT: Kildare

LONGFORD v MEATH

(Tomorrow, Longford, 3.00pm)

Meath are better placed for this.

VERDICT: Meath

DUBLIN v WICKLOW

(Tomorrow, Portlaoise, 4.00pm)

One word; Dublin.

VERDICT: Dublin

MUNSTER SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

TIPPERARY v CORK

(Tonight, Thurles, 7.00pm)

Despite being shafted with the scheduling, Tipp should do this.

VERDICT: Tipperary

TIPPERARY v CORK

(Tomorrow, Thurles, 2.00pm)

A chance for a double here.

VERDICT: Tipperary

CLARE v WATERFORD

(Tomorrow, Ennis, 3.30pm)

With Austin Gleeson and Pauric Mahony out through injury, Clare will fancy their chances. However...

VERDICT: Waterford

LEINSTER HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

OFFALY v WEXFORD

(Tonight, Tullamore, 7.00pm)

Wexford are much farther down the road than Offaly.

VERDICT: Wexford

GALWAY v KILKENNY

(Tomorrow, Salthill, 4.00pm)

AS impressive as Kilkenny were in their recovery against Dublin, they will find it very difficult here.

VERDICT: Galway
