Carew hopes for Earley comeback

Hopes are growing that Kildare midfielder Dermot Earley could play a part in the All-Ireland SFC semi-final against Down on August 29 after a scan showed that the knee injury he sustained in last Sunday's victory over Meath isn't as serious as was initially feared.

Earley has been troubled with a knee problem all season and was forced off after just a minute at Croke Park.

"We're hopeful Dermot will be alright for the Down match," said selector Niall Carew.

"The results of the scan were not as bad as we had feared so there is hope that he will be able to play. Dermot will rest up this week and then he will be doing a lot of rehab but the signs are good that he will be back."
