Cavan's bid to break its duck in the Ulster Club SFC will roll onto next year after Castlerahan were beaten in an exciting quarter-final clash at Kingspan Breffni.

Both sides were profligate in the first half and spurned two gilt-edged goal chances apiece, while Castlerahan's seven first-half wides (11 in total) also came back to haunt them.

It was a case of third time lucky for the Glenties men in the 25th minute when Charlie McGuinness and Ciaran Thompson combined in a tight space for the latter to slide the ball under the advancing Jamie Leahy, which helped leave Castlerahan trailing 0-5 to 1-5 at the interval.

The Donegal champions appeared to be on easy street when sub Dermot Molloy made it 1-10 to 0-6 after 42 minutes but their hosts came storming back.

With county star Cian Mackey pulling the strings, Castlerahan reeled in their opponents and a brace of points from the excellent Cormac Daly made it a two-point game by the 63rd minute.

The red carding of substitute Gavin Daly time added further salt into Castlerahan's wounds.

Three minutes later, Naomh Conaill sealed a date with Clontibret in the semis with a gem from Anthony Thompson.

Castlerahan scorers: C Daly (0-4); K Cosgrave (0-3, 1f); S Cooney (0-1); E Flanagan (0-1); S Brady (0-1); B Ennis (0-1).

Naomh Conaill scorers: C Thompson (1-2, '45, 1f); A Thompson (0-3); C McGuinness (0-2,1f); L McLoone (0-1); J McKelvey (0-1); D Molloy (0-1); B McDyer (0-1).
