Cavan face relegation battle

Louth 0-13 Cavan 1-06

Cavan's hopes of staying in Division 3 of the NFL took a major knock with a four points defeat to Louth in Drogheda.

Cavan got the early break when Ciaran Galligan burst through the centre to set up Cian Mackey for a well taken goal after four minutes.

Cavan’s David Givney was on hand to take a point after Neil Gallagher made a point blank save.

Louth eventually settled to score seven points without reply. Ronan Carroll got the first of these before retiring with an injury.

Mark Brennan, Darren Clarke, Brian White (0-2), Adrian Reid and Aaron Hoey also added to the home side's tally before Mackey pointed a free close to half time.

Hoey's prowess from the dead ball was evident on either side of the interval as he notched up four points from free kicks.

Cavan took 17 minutes to register a score in the second half — again from Mackey — as the Breffni men mounted a late revival, but Mackey and Gareth Smith's (0-2) efforts amounted to too little, too late.

Brian White gave a master class in free taking to make sure that the home side never lost control.

Louth finished the match with 14 men as Alan Clarke was sent off for a second yellow card late in the contest.

Cavan have secured only two points from their opening three fixtures.
