Cavan 1-7 Monaghan 0-4: Life just gets better and better for Cavan. The county is already assured of promotion to Division Two of the Allianz Football League and now the Breffni U21 representatives have taken a giant stride towards securing the provincial title for the fourth consecutive year by overcoming Monaghan in last night's semi-final at a saturated Athletic Grounds, Armagh.

They may have had to work overtime but Cavan's spirit and commitment were never in question.

Monaghan managed just two points in the first-half from Christopher McKenna and Padraig McKenna while Cavan fared only marginally better, Kevin Bouchier flighting over a brace of frees and the dangerous Tom Hayes also hitting the target to give the Breffni outfit a slender 0-3 to 0-2 interval lead.

But the pendulum swung more decisively in Cavan's favour when midfielder Michael Argue's hopeful long-range effort eluded Monaghan substitute goalkeeper Darren McDonald in the 48th minute for the only goal.

Cavan found a higher gear in the closing quarter and substitutes Aaron O'Hara and Cian Byrne secured their place in the decider with points in the final minutes.
