Cavan survive late surge by Roscommon

Cavan 0-14 Roscommon 1-8: Cavan's 100 per cent record remains intact after they ground out a hard-fought win over Roscommon in Breffni Park last night in what was a dress rehearsal for the NFL Division 3 final.

Roscommon started the brighter and led by 0-3 to 0-0 before Cavan levelled, with former Burnley FC pro Martin Reilly leading the charge.

The Rossies became the first side to score a goal against Cavan in this league when Senan Kilbride fisted to the net but then went 29 minutes without scoring, as Cavan tacked on points from Niall McDermott, Eugene Keating, Gearoid McKiernan and man of the match Martin Dunne.

Cavan's patient use of possession and disciplined defending meant they were always in control and they withstood a late surge from John Evans' men to deservedly take the points.

With several regulars set to return for both sides, this phoney war will have little relevance to the real battle next month in HQ.

Scorers: Cavan: N McDermott (0-5, 4f); M Dunne (0-4, 1f); G McKiernan (0-2); E Keating (0-1); D O'Reilly (0-1); K Tierney (0-1)

Roscommon: S Kilbride (1-1); D Shine (0-4, 4f); F Cregg (0-1); K Higgins (0-1); C Murtagh (0-1).
