Cooney pays tribute to Doyle

GAA president Christy Cooney has led tributes to legendary Tipperary hurler John Doyle, who has passed away at the age of 80.

Doyle won eight All-Ireland medals and 11 National League medals in a career that spanned three decades.

He was a Tipperary selector, a member of GAA's Central Council and also a member of Tipperary county board.

"John made an immense contribution to the Association over the course of his life. This spanned from his remarkable success on the hurling field with eight All-Ireland medals, sharing the honour with Christy Ring, right up to his contribution at national level," said Cooney.

"He is regarded as one of the best defenders ever to grace the game."

He is survived by his wife Ann, two sons and five daughters.
