Derry's hopes of reaching a NHL decider for the first time in many years came to a crashing halt at Owenbeg yesterday afternoon.
This deserved one point win for bottom of the table Wicklow ended any need for Derry to check the results of Kerry's game against London the top of the table clash between Carlow and Westmeath.
As it turned out Carlow and Kerry were both victorious, meaning not even a home win would have taken Derry into a league decider.
Derry did take the lead with an Aaron Kelly point after 20 seconds but corner forward Andy Byrne converted four frees in his 0-05 first half haul.
With five minutes of the half remaining Wicklow were 0-07 to 0-02 ahead before Brendan Douban scored the only goal of the game in the 34th minute to cut the half time lead to 0-07 to 1-03.
Ruairi Convery did point five first half frees and levelled the scores with another on the restart but the visitors got over the line with O'Brien pointing two late frees to clinch the victory.
