A point-blank save from Kian McGonigle won Derry a first minor title since 2017 in a blockbuster at Omagh last night.

Monaghan played their part in a classic and got the game back to a point as it ticked into stoppage time.

Monaghan captain Connor Eccles looked like he won the game, but McGonigle somehow kept the shot out and Derry, with late points from impressive skipper Matthew Downey and substitute Ryan McEldowney, sealed the deal.

Derry got the perfect start with a Niall O’Donnell goal and by the water-break opened a 1-5 to 0-2 lead.

The score of the half came seconds later. Mark Doherty won a breaking ball and after going through four or five sets of Derry hands, Lachlan Murray, who was red-carded later, had the ball over the bar.

Mark Counihan’s side had Ethan Graham sent to the sin bin, but they went on the attack seconds later and Diarmuid Marron curled over their first score from play.

Downey stretched Derry’s lead, after a Murray pass, at the break, 1-8 to 0-4.

Derry had to play with 13 men for five minutes with Charlie Diamond in the sin bin, but with Mark Doherty and Donncha Gilmore throwing themselves onto breaking ball, they steadied themselves.

The Oak Leafers were 1-12 to 0-8 ahead by the second water-break before Monaghan had a purple patch, with goalkeeper McGonigle varying his kick-outs enough to ease the pressure.

With two minutes of normal time left, Cian Conlon and Mooney (free) added points and there was just a goal between the teams, 1-13 to 0-13.

Monaghan weren’t finished there and with the momentum behind them had the margin cut to a single point.

Matthew Downey kicked a free to steady the ship, but back came the blue wave.

Another high ball was lobbed into the Derry defence and McGonigle’s reflexes somehow denied Eccles a winning goal before McEldowney tapped over the insurance point.
