Ryan Murray is the star in students' victory over Derry
Derry 1-05 Queen's Uni 1-09
Queen's saved everyone the hassle of getting the calculators out as they blocked the passage of a highly experimental Derry team to a potential McKenna Cup semi-final.
The Oak Leafers handed starts to 11 of their under-21 team, and only the withdrawals of Ciaran McFaul and Terence O'Brien prevented that figure from being 13.
Antrim's Ryan Murray stood out a mile for Queen's, hitting 1-5, including a blistering finish past Eoin McNicholl for his side's goal.
That came on the half hour mark and sent James McCartan's side, who meet Sligo IT in their Sigerson Cup opener, 1-6 to 0-4 ahead at the break.
The game rarely rose from the malaise and the first 20 minutes of the second period saw just one score at either end. There were a few mild skirmishes, however, and referee Donal Connolly, having been lenient in the first half, dished out six yellows and three black cards in the second period.
Niall Loughlin notched his first Derry goal on his own club ground - chosen to host the game after both Owenbeg and Lavey were unavailable - but the Oak Leafers finished the game with 13 men after black cards for debutants Peter Hagan and Anthony Hargan after they'd used all six subs.
It appeared that Queen's should have been down to 14 towards the end when Gerard McGovern was black carded. It's understood that he was yellow carded at the start of the second half. Derry are highly unlikely to protest however, and will refocus their sights on their National League opener with Donegal in 12 days' time.
