Down advance to final

Down qualified for their first All-Ireland football final since 1994 with a narrow 1-16 to 1-14 win over Kildare in a gripping Croke Park encounter.

Kildare opened strongly with points from Eamon Callaghan and Johnny Doyle, but Benny Coulter punched home a 12th minute goal to help Down to a 1-9 to 0-7 interval lead.

Down had gone seven points clear when Eamon Callaghan smashed in a 58th minute goal, but the Ulster men held out in a frantic finish to set up a meeting with Cork in the decider, after Kildare sub Robert Kelly had sent a stoppage time free crashing against the crossbar.
