Black cards mar Down's joy

By Tony Bagnall

Down 1-15 UUJ 0-07: Down eased through their opening Dr McKenna Cup match against Jordanstown with a solid 1-15 to 0-7 winning margin.

On the negative side for Down, referee Joe McQuillan produced two black cards with Kalum King and Darragh O'Hanlon both walking before the break.

McQuillan issued UUJ's Pearse Casey with the same colour card.

Down manager James McCartan, as expected, wasn't getting carried away as he said: "There were plenty of errors but you're going to see that this time of year and in our first game out. But we're delighted to get moving."

Jordanstown drew first blood with Niall McKeever and Paul McPolin pointing in the first 10 minutes, but after that slow start Down got their act together with Mark Poland top-scoring in the opening half with four points.

At the break the home side led 0-7 to 0-3. Gary McArdle, Darragh O'Hanlon and Kalum King got the other Down scores with Danny Savage grabbing the third UUJ point. Peter Fitzpatrick fired home the game's lone goal on 37 minutes and the Mourne side added further scores via Conleth O'Hare (0-3), Liam Devlin, Daniel McCartan and Connaire Harrison while Savage (0-2), Cailain O'Boyle and substitute Danny McKay pointed for the Students.
