Dubs off to winning start

All-Ireland champions Dublin made a winning start to the new season with a 0-17 to 0-10 O'Byrne Cup win over Carlow at Dr Cullen Park.

The Dubs strated strongly with points from Bryan Cullen, Miceal McCarthy, and Michael Dara Macauley, and led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time.

Daniel St Ledger steered over a couple of Carlow points as the home side drew level, but Tomas Quinn sealed it for Dublin, coming off the bench to hit five points.

Meath defeated Wexford by 1-13 to 1-10 at Navan. They led by five points at half-time, despite conceding an early goal to PJ Banville.

Newcomer Tom Walsh turned in an impressive showing up front for the Royals, and bagged the decisive goal midway through the second half.

New Galway manager Alan Mulholland made a losing start when his side went down by 1-8 to 0-9 to NUIG in the FBD Connacht League at Tuam.

Ian Galvin was the students' hero, crashing home the only goal of the game eight minutes into the second half.

In the Dr McKenna Cup, teenager Ronan O'Neill netted with his first touch as Tyrone defeated Queen's by 1-13 to 1-5, and Peter Canavan made a winning debut as Fermanagh manager with a 2-11 to 1-6 win over Antrim.
