Fermanagh keep McKenna Cup hopes alive with St Mary's win

Fermanagh 2-13 St Mary's 0-13

By Colm Bradley

Fermanagh were good value for their six-point win over St Mary's as they were able to shift through the gears when needed over the course of the 70 minutes and they still hold an outside chance of making the McKenna Cup semi-final.

Daryl Keenan came off the bench at half-time to score the home side's second goal on the 50-minute mark and this opened up a five-point lead the students were not able to recover from.

Fermanagh captain Eoin Donnelly, who had scored the opening goal of the game, was harshly sent to the line on 57 minutes for a second yellow card.

Before a score had been registered Mark Reid in the St Mary's goal had saved a Daniel Teague penalty but at 1-03 to no score it looked like Fermanagh would walk away with the fixture. St Mary's were to come right back into the game, however, and hit six on the spin over 12 minutes.

Fermanagh rallied for the last 10 minutes of the half with Breen their catalyst on more than one occasion. A point with his left foot followed by an assist for Ciaran Corrigan helped restore Fermanagh's advantage although Kavanagh kept the students in touch at the other end.

In the second half that Keenan goal was matched by points from Tomas Corrigan, Tommy McCaffrey and substitute Paul McCusker with Kavanagh and Oisin O'Neill on target for the Ranch as Fermanagh kept the students at bay to claim the win.
