Haughey's late flurry caps comeback

By Kevin Kelly

In the end it was a pity there had to be a loser as St.Colman's Newry booked their place in the quarter finals of the Danske Bank MacRory Cup after a thrilling encounter at Inniskeen.

In their debut season in the competition, St.Ciaran's made the record winners work hard for their victory and in fact, they led with just a minute of normal time left to play. That's when Hogan Cup winner Jack Haughey came to his side's rescue with the last three points of the game to take his personal haul to a hugely impressive 1-9 and book a last eight meeting with Omagh CBS.

It was honours even at the break 1-5 to 0-8 after a stop start opening period. St.Ciaran's had raced into a three point lead thanks to efforts from Mark Kavanagh and Christopher Morris, but St.Colman's responded through Haughey and Conor Gilmore to get their noses in front before Mark McConnell got the first goal of the night.

Jody McGlone and Kavanagh edged the Tyrone school two in front on the resumption, but then Haughey smashed in a brilliant goal off the underside of the bar and that was followed soon after by a goal from Pearse McCrickard.

That would have knocked the heart out of any side but Ballygawley hit back with a goal from McGlone. Half back Patrick O'Hagan then pointed from a free as well as from play as St.Colmans appeared to have weathered the storm.

St.Ciarans though had other ideas and a Pauric McAnenly goal kept them in touch before Kavanagh sent a rocket of a 20 metre free straight to the net after he had been fouled himself. They were so close to a famous victory but St.Colmans aren't record holders of the competition for nothing and a Haughey free levelled matters before he scored twice more in injury time to seal victory.
