Late glory for St Mary’s

Cavan 1-8 St Mary’s 1-12

A last minute goal at Kingspan/Breffni Park by sub Lee McQuaid was enough to edge out Cavan and help make it two wins from two starts for the students of St Mary's in the Dr McKenna Cup.

McQuaid's effort countered a fourth minute penalty by Cavan's Gareth Smith which helped the hosts into a 1-5 to 0-6 lead.

Wasteful Cavan notched 11 first half wides as they failed miserably to consolidate their bright start.

With Kevin Niblock in fine form from frees for the Saints, the visitors leaped into the lead for the first time in the 54th minute when Niblock made it 0-10 to 1-6.

Cavan huffed and puffed thereafter to try and gain parity but their abject failure to convert decent chances in front of goal hamstrung their efforts until the death when McQuaid struck the decisive goal.
