McCarthy calls it a day

Kerry centre back Mike McCarthy has retired, and it's for good this time.

McCarthy came out of retirement after three years to help the Kingdom to All-Ireland SFC glory last year, but he has informed manager Jack O'Connor that he is quitting permanently.

The 32-year-old defender, who won All-Ireland medals in 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2009, announced his retirement following the 2006 final, but was persuaded by O'Connor to return.

He laid on a series of classy displays as a struggling Kerry side turned their season around in 2009 to win the Sam Maguire Cup.
