McHugh on fire as Farney stay top

Cavan 0-10 Monaghan 1-18

Monaghan consolidated their table-topping berth with a resounding NHL Division Four victory over Cavan at Kingspan/Breffni Park.

Sean Leonard's goal helped Monaghan 1-4 to 0-0 in front after only seven minutes.

Cavan's only scorer Bernard Gaffney opened his account in the 11th minute but failed to prevent the hosts slipping 0-5 to 1-9 behind by half-time.

Things didn't get any better for Cavan on the restart either with Monaghan's top-scorer Michael McHugh rubbing salt in their wounds.

Cavan went hunting for goals in the second half but opposing 'keeper Gerard Ruddy made a number of point-blank saves.

Monaghan's number one excelled himself in the 44th minute in particular when bringing off a double save from Michael O'Connell.

The visitors led by 1-12 to |0-8 entering the final quarter and for all Gaffney's powerful and accurate striking, Cavan were impotent going forward.

Gaffney notched his final score in the 57th minute to cut Monaghan's lead to 1-5 to 0-10 but, predictably, it was the visitors who finished the stronger with McHugh once more coming to the fore.
