McIntyre steps down at Galway

John McIntyre has resigned as Galway hurling boss.

Speculation that he may quit his post had been increasing since the Tribesmen lost to Waterford in the All-Ireland quarter-final.

McIntyre had been under pressure since the defeat to Dublin in the Leinster SHC, but the team's form improved with wins over Westmeath.

In his three years in charge, the former Offaly manager failed to take Galway past the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Under-21 boss Anthony Cunningham, who guided his team to the All-Ireland title last weekend, is being tipped as McIntyre's successor.
