Monaghan's title bid on track following Laois encounter

Monaghan 0-19 Laois 0-14: Monaghan maintained their push for promotion and a place in the Division Two final with this five points victory in Clones yesterday.

This was a contest where fortunes fluctuated during the second and third quarters, Laois overhauling Monaghan who had started brightly to draw level for the first time in the 21st minute, and then taking the lead three times to force Monaghan to play catch up, before they went in level at 0-8 apiece at the break.

In the second half Monaghan regained their earlier supremacy but they were under threat repeatedly from Laois counter attacks and it took some last-ditch defending to keep them at bay.

The introduction of Stephen Gollogly had a marked effect on the outcome and his two points and assists proved crucial as Monaghan moved five points clear entering the final stages.

To their credit, Laois fought to the bitter end but they never looked like getting the goal they needed if they were to have any chance of turning it around.

Scorers: Monaghan: C McManus 0-6 (4f), K Hughes 0-4, D Mone 0-2, S Gollogly 0-2, F Kelly, D Clerkin, G Doogan, M McElroy and P Finlay 0-1 each.

Laois: D Strong 0-4, R Munnelly 0-3 (3f), J O'Loughlin, C Meredith, B Sheehan, D Kingston, (free), D Conway, G Walsh (free) and D O'Connor 0-1 each.
