More Minor glory for Tyrone

Monaghan 1-08 Tyrone 0-14: Tyrone put a little gloss on a bad weekend for the Red Hand county by winning a 23rd provincial title at this grade in Clones yesterday.

The young Tyrone team were hot favourites to beat Monaghan, who were attempting to win the title for the first time in 77 years, but it was a lot closer than expected.

Tyrone hit seven points in a row in a devastating 10-minute spell in the first half but were hit with a goal by Conor McCarthy just before half-time, which meant Monaghan trailed by just 0-8 to 1-4 at the break.

Monaghan scored 0-3 after the goal either side of half-time and hit the front with 20 minutes to go.

But Tyrone reeled off a further five points in a row, emptying their bench to good effect, with Danny McNulty particularly impressive, to give supporters something to smile about after the poor result in Killarney the night before.

"Tyrone have a massive history in the Ulster minor championship," said Red Hands boss Mickey Donnelly.

"These boys are just children at the end of the day. It was difficult because they knew they were expected to win today, but they are good, competent footballers and they can keep the ball very well."

Conor McCarthy's 25th-minute goal gave Monaghan genuine hope, and they trailed only by a point at the half-time break.

The teams were level three times in the third quarter, but Tyrone were ultimately just too strong, and they pulled away with points from Mark Bradley (two) and the impressive Kieran McGeary.
