Murphy magic keeps Glenswilly dreaming

By Chris McNulty

Glenswilly 1-10 St Gall's 0-10: Michael Murphy hit 1-4 as Donegal champions Glenswilly defeated Antrim kingpins and 2010 All-Ireland winners St Gall's.

As Glenswilly celebrated reaching their first Ulster senior club semi-final, St Gall's were left to reflect on a day when they kicked their chances away.

Only briefly did they lead in this one, when Conor McGourty (2), Anto Healy and Kevin Niblock had them 0-4 to 0-2 ahead.

Glenswilly finally took charge in the final 10 minutes of the first-half.

When Murphy was adjudged to have been fouled by Andrew McClean, the match-winner arrived in the form of an emphatically-taken goal by the the in-form full-forward.

The penalty decision left St Gall's manager Carl McCabe "a bit bewildered".

With Gary McFadden, Kealan McFadden and Neil Gallagher on the mark, Glenswilly took a 1-5 to 0-4 lead into the break.

St Gall's registered 11 wides and dropped another two efforts short.

"Unforgivable" was McCabe's assessment.

"We have the same problems coming back to haunt us again," he said.

"It is inexcusable. We trust the people with the ball in their hands, but that was one of the freak days and it simply isn't good enough.

"There are loads of excuses, but we have only ourselves to blame.

"It'll haunt everyone involved with this team for another season."

With Gallagher and Ciaran Bonner getting on top around the middle, Glenswilly were as economical as St Gall's were wasteful.

Only two wides were registered by the Donegal side, who held firm during the second-half.

Murphy landed a delightful point early in the half after fetching from Bonner's cross-field ball, while a pair of majestic 45s by the Donegal captain had real touches of class.

With McGourty, Sean Burke, Karl Stewart and Michael Pollock on target, St Gall's stayed in touch, but it would turn out to be a wretched afternoon for the Antrim men.

Glenswilly manager Gary McDaid said: "It is a marvellous scalp, but there's no point in us taking that scalp and not going on to beat Roslea."
