Oak Leafers battle back to defeat Orchard lads

Derry Under 21s 2-10 Armagh Under 21s 3-3: Pre-match favourites Armagh hit Derry with three goals in the first half but it was the Oak Leafers who emerged victorious in this Under 21 Championship clash.

Those three goals came despite home side Derry playing with a very strong wind at their backs, but a 1-07 scoring burst either side of half time gave them the impetus to take complete control of the game.

Armagh’s Rory Grugan palmed in a goal in the eighth minute from a Gavin McParland cross.

Derry did not get their first score until the 17th minute when Benny Heron took a pass from Aidan Mullan and slammed the ball to the net.

Three minutes later a superb Grugan pass set up Aidan Forker for the Orchard County’s second goal.

McParland then crashed home Armagh’s third goal for a 3-01 to 1-02 lead.

In the final minutes of the half Derry scored four points through Heron and O’Boyle (3) to cut Armagh’s half time lead to 3-01 to 1-06.

Within a minute of the restart Derry were in front for the first time when O’Boyle took a sublime pass from Dermot McGuckin and fired the ball low to the Armagh net.

In the final minute Armagh’s woe was complete when Aidan Forker was sent off for a second yellow card.
