Patience name of the game in search for the real culprits

By John Cambell

The Ulster Council is prepared to exercise patience in terms of pinpointing and punishing the culprits responsible for the violence that marred the aftermath of the recent Ballymacnab v Stewartstown Ulster Intermediate Club Football Championship semi-final.

And it is to the Council's credit that getting to the root cause of the problem is seen as much more important than planning a hasty termination of the competition.

The Council's Activities Committee will now summon individuals to its next meeting, expected to be held before Christmas, at which they will be expected to explain their actions during the violence.

For now, no decision has been made as to whether the match will be replayed or not - indeed, it's much better for all concerned that justice is seen to be dispensed in the first instance and then the competition can proceed, assuming that point is eventually reached.

Whoever is crowned Ulster champions will not be in action again until the All Ireland Intermediate semi-final on February 18 and that affords the Ulster Council leeway in dealing with their current process.

The Antrim management committee for 2007 will be comprised as follows:

Chairman: Dr. John McSparran, Vice-chairman: Eamonn McMahon, Secretary: Jim Murray, Assistant Secretary: Danny McLernon, Treasurer: Gerald McGarry, Assistant Treasurer: Tyrone Eastwood, PRO: Terry Cormican, Culture Officer: Gearoid Robinson, Registrar: Frank Smyth, Development Officer: Patsy Lynn, Youth Officer: Tony McCollum, Coaching Officer: Sean Fleming

South West Chairman: Patsy Lynn, North Chairman: Niall Kearney, South Chairman: Michael Dobbin,Ulster Council delegates: Michael Hasson, Jim Murray.

SEAMUS McGeeney has been elected chairman of the thriving Down Supporters Club.

He heads up an organisation which has raised a considerable sum for Down teams in recent years.
