Peter Canavan thwarted as Patrician HS clinch glory

Patrician HS 2-15 Holy Trinity 0-13

By John Campbell

Peter Canavan's playing career was full of success but the Tyrone legend encountered disappointment yesterday when the Holy Trinity College, Cookstown side he coaches fell to Patrician HS, Carrickmacross in the MacLarnon Cup final by 2-15 to 0-13 at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh.

David Garland, who scored 1-8 with just one point coming from a free, underpinned the Monaghan team's triumph.

A first-half goal from Andrew Woods and a brace of points each from Stephen Finnegan, Ryan O'Connor and Gavin McEnaney all proved crucial in the end.

Conan McLernon kept Holy Trinity, managed by Martin McGirr and Kevin O'Boyle, in contention with four points while Tomas Carney and midfield ace James Devlin each landed three. Skipper David Mulgrew bagged two.

Holy Trinity shot 10 wides in all and allowed Patrician HS to finish with a flourish.
