Sherry nicks it as Fermanagh grab first victory

Fermanagh 2-06 Roscommon 0-11

Fermanagh stole the points at Brewster Park on Saturday night with an injury time goal from captain James Sherry giving Malachy O’Rourke’s side their first win in Allianz National Football League Division Three.

Roscommon looked set for victory after a good second half performance from Fergal O’Donnell’s men and with the game in injury time they held a two point advantage.

However, Fermanagh, who looked bereft of ideas for the majority of the second half, launched one final attack.

Substitutes Chris O’Brien and John Woods combined on the right hand side and the ball was played across the goal to Sherry who collected and fired low to the corner of the net to give the Ernemen a win they scarcely deserved.

Roscommon began in a purposeful manner with points from Cathal Cregg and Kevin Higgins.

Fermanagh seemed to grab the initiative early in the second half when Ryan Carson slotted the ball home at the second attempt, his lob over Geoffrey Claffey coming off the crossbar before he tucked away the rebound to make it 1-04 to 0-05. Ciaran Flaherty and John Rogers exchanged scores but Roscommon’s hopes of a first league win were to be extinguished by Sherry’s late intervention as Fermanagh snatched a narrow victory.
